In Japan, the results of the national automobile award 2022/2023 of the year – Japan Car of the Year (JCOTY) have been summed up. The competition has been held since 1980, and the best of the best are selected by a jury, which includes Japanese journalists and market experts. Contenders for the victory meet two requirements: they all entered the Japanese market between November 1, 2021 and October 31, 2022, and their circulation is at least 500 copies. This season, the most points were awarded to two platform electric kei cars Mitsubishi and Nissan.
The Nissan Sakura/Mitsubishi eK X EV won with 399 points each. Honda Civic e:HEV/Civic Type R (320 points) and Toyota Crown (236 points) came in second and third respectively. The top five were Mazda CX-60 e-Skyactiv D 3.3 (141 points) and Nissan X-Trail (84 points).
Suzuki Alto had the lowest score with 28 points, slightly better were Range Rover (30 points) and BMW iX (45 points). The Nissan Fairlady Z was awarded 72 points and the Renault Arkana 70 points. The South Korean electric crossover Hyundai Ioniq 5 was recognized as the best foreign car, its score was 75 points.
Last year, the Nissan Note hatchback took home the title of best car in the Japanese market, competing for the title with the Toyota GR86/Subaru BRZ, Toyota Land Cruiser 300, Chevrolet Corvette and other finalists.
