Kia has added two turbo engines and a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter hybrid system to the new Sportage. Almost a year and a half after the premiere of the fifth-generation crossover, the range has expanded significantly: in the Celestial Empire, Kia Sportage will have original equipment that does not look like European, American, or Russian. The Chinese model also has its own bumpers, a different front panel and a modified central tunnel.
Outside, the Chinese Kia Sportage looks like the “global” version of the X-Line with characteristic bumpers, but otherwise there are no differences from the long-wheelbase version familiar to the Russians. But the interior has changed more: the crossover for China has a more restrained front panel with a horizontal air duct, the climate control unit has been redesigned (the emphasis is on rockers, not washers), there is a truncated steering wheel, and the interface of the central tunnel has been reconfigured.
However, the main design decisions are the same: all Kia Sportage put a curved digital panel, consisting of a pair of 12.3-inch screens, identical door cards and seats are used everywhere.
The key differences between the Chinese Sportage are hidden under the hood. Firstly, in the Celestial Empire, the crossover is exclusively front-wheel drive. Secondly, the base version is equipped with a 1.5-liter supercharged engine (200 hp, 253 Nm), and an optional 2.0-liter turbo engine (236 hp, 353 Nm). Both units are combined with an 8-speed automatic and are exclusive to China.
Finally, the hybrid Kia Sportage HEV is faithful to the old scheme with a 150-horsepower “aspirated” 2.0 and a 6-speed automatic, peak output – 200 forces and 350 Nm. In other markets, the gasoline-electric versions of the same name were transferred to the 1.6 T-GDI turbo four. In China, the hybrid consumes 5.6 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers in the combined cycle, the conventional versions require from 7.0 to 7.54 liters.
Sales of the Chinese Kia Sportage have already begun. The base crossover costs 179,800 yuan, the 2.0-liter version starts at 190,800 yuan, and the most expensive hybrid costs 237,800 yuan.
